Ranger wanted to get Sidney out of there. Standing in the room made his skin crawl, and he was ten seconds away from shifting into his warrior form and burning the place to the ground.
This was where he would have ended up if Sidney hadn't found him. He'd be chained on the stage and sold to the highest bidder.
Maybe.
He might have still managed an escape. His claws and fire were more than sufficient to take out a human. But Boar and his crew probably had a few tricks up their sleeves. He saw Boar greet a few other attendees in the audience. The three humans were comfortable in the crowd, and they'd certainly been there before.
Now was the time to make their exit. Sidney's former crew wouldn't be distracted forever, and Ranger didn't want to rely on a bit of shadow for cover. But every time he tried to turn Sidney towards the door, she resisted, planting herself in place and refusing to move.
Wonderful.
There had to be fifty people in the room, and not all of them were free. Some of the audience members held leashes attached to aliens who stood or knelt quietly beside them. Ranger could murder the room in a single burst of fire, but he didn't want to kill the chained up victims who had no choice in being here.
Fighting forty or so slavers was not a winning proposition.
They really needed to go.
So, of course, Sidney wanted to go deeper into the room.
"What are you doing?" Ranger demanded. He admired his mate's courage, but this was bordering on lunacy.
She glared back at him. "Boar is up to something. If he's not selling you, is he selling someone else? Was there another captive on the ship that I missed? Or is he buying someone? I can't let him get away with this!"
"And what are you going to do? Everyone in this room might come to his aid if you interfere." Ranger had enough training to know when battle was the wrong choice. And that was certainly true now. Sidney was riding high on emotion and exhaustion. She wasn't thinking clearly.
But he couldn't force her to walk away.
"We get close," he told her. "But just to listen. If we need to interfere, we do it elsewhere. Got it?"
Her eyes blazed, and Ranger could feel an answering call in his inner fire. But she nodded.
Good.
No one paid attention to them as they slowly crossed the room. A few attendees bid on the alien on display, and then someone won and the alien was taken off stage. Another would take his place soon enough.
He and Sidney were holding hands, and Ranger was glad of it. Focusing on Sidney and her pain was enough to keep him out of his own head and imagining what it might have been like to be led in chains.
No. He had to keep his mate safe. And to do that, he had to focus.
They turned their backs once they were close to Boar so he wouldn't see them, and Ranger put himself between Boar and Sidney.
